We offer a variety of opportunities for school groups of all ages, including guidance in booking writers and translators to arrange your own visit for your school.
As a UNESCO City of Literature, we’re lucky that we have incredible writers on our doorstep, and that we get to welcome writers from all over the world to stay here at the National Centre for Writing at Dragon Hall. Our writers in residence come from a variety of backgrounds and can stay with us for as little as one week or as long as three months.
I’d like an author to come into my school and talk to students about writing: how do I book them?
The easiest way is to get in touch directly through an author’s website, where you should be able to find contact details for them or for their publisher or agent. But NCW can give some recommendations of authors by email. You will need to pay the writer a fee and any logistical costs incurred (eg travel expenses). NCW supports Fair Pay for writers, so if your budget isn’t equal to support a visit, it would be worth exploring our free resources section instead. Visits from our writers in residence are free to schools.
How do I book a writer to run a bespoke workshop in my school?
If you would like a bespoke creative writing workshop in your school, NCW can send you a list of local, recommended tutors whom you can contact directly. Please email [email protected] for this list.
How much does a bespoke workshop in my school cost?
Workshops cost £150 – 200 for a two-hour visit and workshop, or £300 – 400 for a full day + travel and expenses. The fee should be agreed in advance with the tutor who will invoice the school directly.
My school’s budget is less than the fee, is there anything NCW can still do if we want to visit Dragon Hall?
Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to discuss your needs and budget and we will do our best to arrange something for your school. We also have free resources which you can download and use in the classroom at your own convenience.
