One of Val McDermid’s selected writers for the International Literature Showcase
“Lyrical, ethereal and sometimes brutal, it’s an intense exploration what it means to be different.”
– Val McDermid
Fiona Mozley’s debut novel, Elmet (JM Originals, 2017), was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, the RSL/Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award and the Ondaatje Prize. It won a Somerset Maugham Award and the Polari Prize, and was long-listed for the Dylan Thomas International Prize and the Women’s Prize. She has had writing published in British Vogue, The Guardian, The Financial Times, The New Statesman, and elsewhere. She lives in Edinburgh.
“A quiet explosion of a book, exquisite and unforgettable” The Economist
“Elmet is in so many ways a wonder to behold. It is also this year’s David among the predictable Goliaths on the Booker list. How thrilling if David were to win against them” Evening Standard
“A work of troubling beauty . . . Brutal, bleak, ethereal” New Statesman
“Mozley is a gifted writer . . . Pastoral idyll, political exposé, cosy family saga and horror tale, it reads like a traditional children’s story that turns into a gangster film: Hansel and Gretel meets The Godfather” Sunday Times
“An impressive slice of contemporary noir steeped in Yorkshire legend . . . Elmet possesses a rich and unfussy lyricism” Guardian
It is thrilling to think that Val McDermid knows who I am….more seriously, though, it is an honour to be included in Val McDermid’s Showcase
