National Centre for Writing is recruiting two freelance Creative Facilitators to deliver workshops to primary schools as part of the National Lottery Heritage funded project, Stories From the Quarter.

The project

Stories From the Quarter is a Norfolk-wide 18-month long programme that aims to connect more people and communities with the medieval and migrant heritage of Norwich’s medieval quarter, from Lower King St to Magdalen St. This project was inspired by the King St Community Voices project that collected dozens accounts of people’s memories of living and working on King St throughout the 20th century.

Working with primary schools and Norwich’s Bengali communities, Stories From the Quarter will establish a series of creative workshops, heritage site visits to Dragon Hall and a collection of Bengali oral histories which will be made available in the Norfolk Record Office. A trail map of oral histories will be made available to the public in late 2022 and a project open day celebration event will take place in early 2023.

The role

Creative Facilitators will devise and deliver between 9-12 workshops each across two schools in June & July 2022 and receive heritage training.

Once the workshops have been delivered, Creative Facilitators will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a digital teaching resource pack.

The schedule

April 2022: Creative Facilitators take part in a half day training session at Dragon Hall delivered by the Heritage Volunteers about the history of building and using object handling as a means to explore heritage.

May 2022: Creative Facilitators plan and prepare the workshop series with support from NCW and the project’s oral history interviewers.

June & July 2022: Workshop 1 – Creative responses to heritage as place and buildings. Schools visit Dragon Hall to explore the Hall’s heritage through object handling with their Creative Facilitator.

Workshop 2 – Creative responses to heritage as culture and memories. 

Creative Facilitators visit their schools and deliver a session using the Bengali oral histories and King St Community Voices as a prompt, with the oral history interviewer to support them.

Workshop 3: Sharing and recording our creative responses to heritage. Creative facilitators visit their schools and deliver a final session that has classes sharing their creative responses with one another either through group work or individual readings. Recordings will be included in the Rooted podcast.

The fees

• £150 per workshop (to include planning time)
• £150 for attending the half day training
• £150 meeting attendance fee
• £300 for teaching pack development

Total 

• Facilitator 1 up to £2,400 + travel
• Facilitator 2 up to £1,950 + travel

Person specification

This is a development opportunity for the right person. You will be supported throughout the programme by the Stories From the Quarter project manager at NCW. 

We are looking for a practising creative either working with words in any form or media.

You will have:

• Experience facilitating creative workshops to groups of up to 30 primary school aged children either in or out of school
• Experience devising creative workshops to a brief

You will be:

• Available to undertake heritage and object handling training on Wednesday 6 April 2022 at Dragon Hall
• Willing to travel to rural Norfolk schools to deliver workshops (car owner not essential)
• Interested in Dragon Hall and Norwich’s medieval and migrant heritage
• Able to work to fixed project deadlines and deliver workshop and activities plans in clear, written form
• Available throughout June – July to deliver their workshop series
