NCW Academy’s new workshop-style event, Behind the Book, lets readers and writers connect with authors through talks, discussions, and writing exercises. Under the historic Dragon Hall beamed ceiling, you will gain insights into the visiting artists’ creative process, try new techniques, and connect with fellow book lovers in an inspiring, interactive setting.
What can you expect from a ‘Behind the Book’ event?
This is an opportunity for readers and writers to take an exclusive look behind the scenes of books written by your favourite authors, in events led by the authors themselves. Via a mix of author talks, open discussion and writing activities, you’ll delve into gripping stories and learn about the author’s process; how they approach the scenes and techniques that have gripped and impressed you. It’s a chance to reflect on the craft and skills behind a good book, and to try your own hand at working through simple writing exercises, designed by the author, which shine a light on how it is done.
You’ll join fellow book lovers and come away from the session with insights about the magic behind your favourite books and creative inspiration for what to read or write next.
Where did the idea for ‘Behind the Book’ come from?
Our ‘Behind the Book’ series has grown out of the popularity of both our live events programme and our craft-based writing workshop series. We wanted a format that could bring together readers and writers from both spaces, to share their passions and enthusiasm while also learning practical skills and insights direct from their favourite authors. The series is aimed at those who are intrigued to know more about the origins of the stories they love and the techniques authors use to create such brilliant work, as well as those ready to use practical exercises to explore and learn.
How will I be expected to participate?
You are free to participate in whatever way feels most comfortable for you. You’ll choose a seat at a table with other writers and readers who we hope you’ll end up chatting to during the session. You’ll listen to the author’s presentation, have an opportunity to contribute to discussion around, and ask questions about, their work and its themes and you’ll be invited to try your hand at writing exercises. You might be invited to share the results of these exercises but there is no obligation. We hope you’ll also participate in enjoying hot drinks and cakes provided and browsing the author’s books.
What will I come away with?
You will take home exclusive insights from the author about their process and how they approach a particular area of their writing practice – whatever the focus of your session is.
You’ll have the results of a writing exercise led by your favourite author, having given you an opportunity to learn or practice a particular skill. This might inspire you to write more or as a reader, give you fresh appreciation and understanding when enjoying future stories.
You might even come away with a new connection to a fellow reader or writer with a shared passion for books.
Who is the event for?
It is for anyone and everyone interested in and passionate about reading and writing. You might be an avid reader who wants to ask your favourite author a burning question, or a writer who is keen to learn from an expert some tips and tricks for taking your own practice forwards.
What will I need to do/bring?
Bring something to write with, bring any questions you might have for the author but most importantly bring an open mind and enthusiasm.
Will I have a chance to ask questions? Will I get feedback on any writing I do?
The unique format of these events, combining talk, discussion and practical exercises, means there isn’t time for individual feedback on each piece of work. But you might discuss any writing you do with others at the session or use it to spark conversation later on.
There will be an opportunity to ask the author questions about their work and the writing exercises they set.
