The National Centre for Writing (NCW) and Norwich-based theatre group The Common Lot are delighted to announce that acclaimed poet, scriptwriter, and theatre-maker John Osborne has been appointed as the Writer-in-Residence for Norwich Market.
The residency is part of On the Huh! 900 Years of Norwich Market, an upcoming community performance and exhibition celebrating the rich history of the UK’s largest permanent outdoor market. Known for their unique, high-energy ‘docu-panto’ style, The Common Lot will stage six free outdoor evening performances from 21–26 July 2026.
As Writer-in-Residence, Osborne will collaborate directly with Norwich Market’s traders and customers to co-create short pieces of creative writing. These works will be displayed on text boards throughout the market.
John said:
‘I’ve always loved Norwich market, both as a stripey city landmark and a snapshot of Norwich life. I am starting to immerse myself within the stalls and love overhearing conversations and chatting to stallholders and market-goers. Already this is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable projects I have ever worked on.’
John is a poet, scriptwriter, broadcaster and theatre-maker. He began writing whilst studying at the University of East Anglia and has never stopped, producing an eclectic mix of poetry, storytelling theatre shows, non-fictional explorations of everything from radio to the charms of the seaside and even a Sky One sitcom, After Hours. His blend of humour, nostalgia and wide-eyed delight have been capturing the hearts of audiences and listeners since his show John Peel’s Shed burst onto the scene at Edinburgh Festival in 2011.
He gigs across the UK and particularly loves rural touring with his poetry and storytelling shows. His latest show, Norwich: A Love Story, toured to festivals and other literary happenings across the UK throughout 2025. He lives in Norwich.
Simon Floyd, Common Lot Creative Director, said:
‘We are all delighted to be working alongside John, a fellow Norwich patriot and champion. We know his work will reflect appreciation and affection for the market. Perfect for the whole On the Huh!‘
Peggy Hughes, CEO of the National Centre for Writing said:
‘We would like to thank everyone who applied for this opportunity; we were staggered with the volume and quality of applications, a real testament to the writing talent here in the city, and to the deep love for our wonderful market. John’s experience is a great match for the role, and we’re excited to read the work produced.’
Already this is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable projects I have ever worked on.
On The Huh! 900 Years of Norwich Market
‘On the Huh’ is a large-scale participatory production, a free, site-specific promenade show being performed between 21–26 July 2026.
The Common Lot hope to welcome 2,500 audience members to enjoy the rich and amazing history of the market – a place to debate, share and trade. In divided times, they aim to leave a legacy of cooperation, joy, civic pride and friendship.
