Call for applications: Norwich–Jakarta circular residency (Jakarta, 2026)

Norwich and Jakarta are collaborating with five other UNESCO Cities of Literature on a Circular Residency project. The aim of this exchange is to forge strong, shared bonds between the partner cities, their literary ecosystem and their writers, as well as to raise the profile of the UNESCO City of Literature designation. In 2026, Norwich is hosting a writer from Québec City, and Jakarta is hosting a writer from Norwich. The writing residency in Jakarta will run from 14 September to 10 October 2026.

Residency in Jakarta UNESCO City of Literature

Jakarta is part of the global UNESCO Creative Cities network, as a City of Literature. Find out more about Jakarta and its surroundings here.

Jakarta City of Literature is Indonesia’s gateway to a vast, multilingual literary landscape shaped by 17,000 islands, hundreds of local languages, and a long tradition of storytelling that moves fluidly between oral culture, print, performance, and digital platforms.

Coordinated independently by the 17,000 Islands of Imagination Foundation, the City of Literature works with writers, publishers, translators, festivals, and communities across Indonesia to connect local voices with international networks, including the UK. Its focus is not only on authors, but also on the wider literary ecosystem—editors, programmers, booksellers, librarians, and cultural producers—supporting translation, residencies, exchanges, and public programmes that reflect Jakarta’s diversity, urban realities, and social questions.

For British writers, a residency in Jakarta offers time, access, and context to explore how literature responds to urban life, social change, and plurality—while building meaningful connections with Indonesia’s literary community.

During their residency, in addition to working on their artistic/creative project, the visiting writer will be asked to write a text (fiction or non-fiction, up to 1000 words) that captures their experience of the host city. The text will be used for promotional purposes, and to serve as a guide for future residents.

Travel and Accommodation

The writer will be offered free accommodation in Cove Kyai Maja, a modern co-living space located in Blok M, South Jakarta. Spanning two floors, this space features communal areas such as a kitchen, a dining area, a lounge, and a cozy rooftop perfect for unwinding.

In terms of accessibility, Cove Kyai Maja is located near public transportation, including the ASEAN MRT Station and CSW Transjakarta Bus Stop.

Accommodation is in a private, air-conditioned bedroom with ensuite within an apartment, with access to a shared kitchen and living areas. Please note that there might not be lift access in the apartment building.

The National Centre for Writing will cover the cost of economy class travel to and from Jakarta and will pay a stipend of £350 per week towards living expenses.

The writer should take out their own travel and health insurance for the period of their journey and stay.

Undivided attention is critical for writing and translating, and there’s nothing like a residency in a cottage to foster focus and creativity.
