Meet the World: Els Beerten in Conversation

Meet one of Belgium’s leading young adult novelists, Els Beerten, who will be in Norwich as part of our exchange with Passa Porta International House of Literature in Brussels.

Els Beerten has been widely translated and has received several awards. Her most successful novel is We All Want Heaven. During her time in Norwich, Els will be working on a coming-of-age novel about two young Italian boys in the wake of the Second World War. The story is set in Belgium, Italy and England. Els plans to explore the traces of war along the Norfolk coast, and would like to spend time listening to locals’ stories.

About Els Beerten

Els Beerten’s (b. 1959) oeuvre ranges from middle grade to YA. Her masterpiece is without a doubt We All Want Heaven, which has won her just about every prize imaginable, at home and internationally, and which was nominated for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis. It has been translated into many languages and has won the hearts of YA and adult readers. Her work is characterized by deep psychological insight and her great ability to dissect the human soul.
