Nuril writes novels with LGBT themes in an increasingly fundamentalist religious country. Nuril Basri was born in a village in West Java, Indonesia, and raised as a in a staunchly Islamic community. He has worked in a variety of positions—cashier, tutor, accounts manager, waiter, etc.—the combined experience of which has served to enrich his characters and settings. Nuril is the author of six novels. Website.

‘Not a Virgin’ is Nuril’s sixth book. In this coming of age novel, four Indonesian students seek to discover what their future will bring and look for answers to their questions about sexuality, love, religion and drugs. This tragicomedy moves between an Islamic boarding school and a gay bar in Jakarta, and in doing so illuminates the mindset and yearnings of a new generation of Indonesians.
