Agent Insights with Emma Paterson
Emma Paterson from Aitken Alexander Associates represents writers across literary fiction, non-fiction and poetry – including Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo, short story writer and Guardian columnist Chris Power, and Sunday Times bestseller Otegha Uwagba.
In this two-hour session, Emma will share her insights into what agents do, how they find and work with their authors, as well as her top tips for submitting your manuscript to agents. With an extended Q&A session, the Agent’s Insights event is an invaluable window into the workings of the publishing world.

Literary agent Emma Paterson, joined literary agency Aitken Alexander Associates in 2018, after spending five years with Roger, Coleridge & White. Prior to this, she worked with The Wylie Agency. Emma is the Treasurer of the Association of Authors’ Agents. In 2018, she was named as one of the Bookseller’s Rising Stars.
Emma represents authors of fiction and nonfiction, as well as a select number of poets and short stories. For fiction, Emma is primarily interested in character-drive literary fiction, especially when it has a strong sense of place and addresses world issues. She is particularly drawn to ambitious writing, radical storylines, the darkly comical, and suspenseful narratives.
With regards to nonfiction, Emma enjoys a diverse range of topics. She looks for authors who are skilled at storytelling and work that has been thoroughly researched.
