Venue hire at Dragon Hall

The 15th-century Dragon Hall – home to the National Centre for Writing – is a magnificent timbered trading hall and courtyard garden located in the heart of Norwich. Blending historic detail with sleek contemporary touches, it’s the perfect creative canvas for weddings, parties and important events that seek to do things a little differently.

The soaring oak-beamed Great Hall, paired with the contemporary glass wall of the Foyle Gallery, offers a stunning setting for your event, and the specially designed white flower border in our garden forms an elegant backdrop for photographs.

Dragon Hall is a stone’s throw from the city centre marketplace, and is very easily accessible by public transport, with several public carparks nearby.

Dragon Hall was the perfect venue for our civil partnership. A beautiful historical building, it is at the same time modern and accessible, but retains its history, charm and sense of occasion.

History of Dragon Hall

There have been buildings on the Dragon Hall site for more than a thousand years. The building is a rare example of a medieval merchant’s trading complex, built in about 1430 by a merchant, Robert Toppes.  Its centrepiece, the magnificent first floor trading hall, is 26 metres long, used more than 500 large oak timbers, was decorated with 15 dragons of Baltic oak and has a fine crown post roof.  Its survival gives us the opportunity to appreciate the skills of the 15th century timber craftsmen.
