National Centre for Writing offers a vibrant, year-round programme of innovative events and collaborations that engage writers, literary translators and readers of all ages, in person and online.

At the heart of our programme is a commitment to supporting the development of new writing and translation through early career mentorship schemes, literary awards and structured learning.

Alongside this we work with schools, young people and a diverse mix of our local communities to explore the pleasures and power of creative writing. Our reach extends beyond the UK, both through activities supporting international translators and writers, and a pledge to bring world-class authors to the Norwich stage for readings and live events.

Our wide range of partnerships and projects create opportunities to experience and be part of new voices and stories, while continually responding to the rapidly changing world of literature and translation.

For families

We recognise that a love of words and story-making makes writers of the future and can begin with the very youngest among us. Our family programme responds to this with an enthusiasm to create playful, creative sessions for families to enjoy together.

For schools

We support teachers and practitioners to engage and inspire pupils with creative writing via reading groups, networks with professional writers, free resources, online and in-person activity and place-based school visits.

Explore Norwich UNESCO City of Literature

Norwich was designated England’s first UNESCO City of Literature in 2012, a city of stories today and for the last 900 years. It is a place of ideas where the power of words has changed lives, promoted parliamentary democracy, fomented revolution, fought for the abolition of slavery and transformed literature.

Norwich has been a literary city for over 900 years: a place of ideas where the power of words has changed lives, promoted parliamentary democracy, fomented revolution, fought for the abolition of slavery and transformed literature.

Today, Norwich remains the English destination for poets, novelists, biographers, playwrights, translators, literary critics, historians, environmentalists and philosophers. A place for writers as agents of change.
