The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures
The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures (SISJAC) was founded in 1999 through the generosity of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury to promote knowledge and understanding of Japanese arts and cultures.
Through its dedicated team of researchers and support staff, the Institute undertakes projects and activities focusing on visual arts, archaeology and cultural heritage.
Their research celebrates the diversity of Japanese arts and cultures throughout the Japanese archipelago spanning the Jomon period to the present.
The Lisa Sainsbury Library
The Lisa Sainsbury Library plays a central role at the Institute in supporting these research activities, serving as an essential resource for the study of Japanese arts and cultures. Its collection is highly regarded by researchers in Europe and North America and is widely used by students and scholars in the field at both a national and international level through the Interlibrary Loan Scheme. There are approximately 50,000 volumes in its collection, and over 300 titles of periodicals in both English and Japanese, as well as a series of special collections.
