The British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT)

The British Centre for Literary Translation

The British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) is Britain’s leading centre for the study and support of literary translation.

Founded in 1989 at the University of East Anglia by German writer W.G. Sebald, BCLT is a vibrant research centre supporting a PhD programme, the MA in Literary Translation, and a range of undergraduate modules.

BCLT partners with the National Centre for Writing and a wide network of national and international organisations to deliver a program of activities which support the professional development of literary translators and promote the recognition of literary translation as a profession.

These include literary translation workshops, research seminars and the annual Sebald Lecture on Literary Translation, usually held at the British Library.  BCLT’s International Literary Translation and Creative Writing Summer School take place every year, bringing together translators from around the world for a week of literary translation workshops, panels and creative writing sessions.
