Help us to raise £8,000 to support early-career writers whose voices are under-represented on UK bookshelves

Each year, our Escalator Talent Development Programme supports early-career writers in the East of England by providing eight months of mentoring, training, guidance and networking. These writers have stories to tell that are ambitious, challenging, unconventional and affecting, but their voices are often under-represented on UK bookshelves. Escalator provides them with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop their voice, fine-tune their writing and showcase their talents, with many alumni having gone on to sign with agents, publish and win awards and critical recognition for their writing.

Years of austerity and funding cuts have made funding through traditional means increasingly difficult, so this year we are asking for your help to ensure we are able to continue providing essential support to writers through the Escalator programme.

Can you help us to raise £8,000 for the Escalator programme 2022-23?

‘How Escalator has helped me’

Kate Worsley’s first novel She Rises won the HWA Debut Crown and the New Angle Prize for Literature and was shortlisted for the Lambda Literary Prize for Lesbian Fiction. In 2012 she took part in the Escalator Talent Development Scheme and subsequently received a Grant for the Arts to help fund the completion of her second novel. She was RLF Writing Fellow at the University of Essex from 2014 to 2017 and has been a visiting lecturer in creative writing at City, University of London since 2015.

Kate returned to Escalator this year as a mentor, overseeing the development of two emerging writers from the East of England over a nine-month period.
