About the Escalator campaign

Each year, our Escalator Talent Development Programme supports early-career writers in the East of England by providing eight months of mentoring, training, guidance and networking. These writers have stories to tell that are ambitious, challenging, unconventional and affecting, but their voices are often under-represented on UK bookshelves.

Years of austerity and funding cuts have made funding through traditional means increasingly difficult, so this year we are asking for your help to raise £8,000 to ensure we are able to continue providing essential support to writers through the Escalator programme.

To date Escalator has supported over 130 writers, many of whom have gone on to sign with agents, publish and win awards and critical recognition for their writing.

Nicola Upson, who found her first agent through the Escalator Talent Development Scheme, says:

‘The Escalator programme gives writers from underrepresented backgrounds the chance to develop their professional and artistic potential. It helps to create opportunities to kick-start careers, including gaining limited access to networks and industry knowledge. Writers from groups that are underrepresented, especially those outside of the capital, find that they have limited representation in existing published works, and opportunities appear inaccessible and exclusive. By focusing on writers who are underrepresented in this region Escalator gives us a chance to deal with themes not usually seen and voices not usually heard.’

• £250 covers the cost for the entire Escalator cohort to attend a tailored professional development workshop on editing, performance or voice training
• £1,250 pays for the mentoring of one writer for the duration of their time on Escalator
• £2,000 covers the entire cost of an Escalator writer
